Idrofos is utilized for treating and preventing osteoporosis in women who have gone through menopause. This medication functions by inhibiting bone deterioration and enhancing bone density (thickness). The risk of developing osteoporosis rises after menopause, as women age, or if corticosteroid medications (like prednisone) are taken for extended periods. Idrofos, also referred to as Ibandronic acid, is part of a group of medications known as bisphosphonates.
The primary ingredient in Idrofos is Ibandronate Sodium, which is synonymous with Ibandronic acid.
Idrofos should only be a component of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also consist of dietary modifications, exercise, and taking calcium and vitamin supplements. It is crucial to adhere closely to your diet, medication, and exercise regimens.
Idrofos is administered once a month. It should be taken in the morning, at least 1 hour (60 minutes) prior to eating, drinking anything, or taking any other medications. Choose the same day each month and always take it first thing in the morning. Each tablet should be consumed with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of water, and only plain water (not mineral water) should be used. Do not crush, chew, or suck the tablet; swallow it whole.
After ingesting the Idrofos tablet, follow these instructions carefully: do not lie down or recline for at least 60 minutes, avoid eating or drinking anything other than plain water, and refrain from taking any other medications, including vitamins, calcium, or antacids, for at least 60 minutes after taking this medicine.
It may be advisable to schedule your other medications for a different time of day. Consult your doctor regarding the optimal dosing schedule for your other medicines. To ensure that Idrofos is effective for your condition, regular tests of your bone mineral density will be required. Make regular visits to your doctor.
If you miss your Idrofos dose on the scheduled day, take it first thing in the morning on the day after you remember the missed dose. Then revert to your regular monthly schedule on your chosen dosing day. If your next scheduled dose is less than 7 days away, wait until that date to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take two (2) tablets in one month.
Individuals with known hypersensitivity to Idrofos or any of its inactive components should not use it. There have been reported cases of anaphylaxis, including some fatal incidents. Additionally, it should not be taken by those with uncorrected hypocalcemia or those unable to sit or stand upright for at least 60 minutes.
The most prevalent side effects of Ibandronate Sodium appearing in 5% or more of patients undergoing treatment with Idrofos 150 include back pain, dyspepsia, extremity pain, diarrhea, headache, and myalgia.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Discontinue use of Idrofos and contact your doctor if you experience any of these severe side effects: chest pain, difficulty or pain while swallowing, pain or burning sensation under the ribs or in the back, new or worsening heartburn, severe joint, bone, or muscle pain, unusual pain in your thigh or hip, jaw pain, numbness, or swelling.
Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, heartburn, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, muscle cramps, numbness or tingling sensations, facial muscle tightness, seizures (convulsions), irritability, and strange thoughts or behavior.
Idrofos should not be used if you are allergic to any of its components, if you have severe kidney disease, low calcium levels (hypocalcemia), or an esophageal problem (the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach). Avoid taking Idrofos if you are unable to sit upright or stand for at least one full hour; it can lead to serious issues in the stomach or esophagus, necessitating you to remain upright for at least 60 minutes post-ingestion.
Some individuals using medications similar to Idrofos have developed bone loss in the jaw, termed osteonecrosis of the jaw. Symptoms may include jaw pain, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, gum infections, or slow healing after injuries or surgeries related to the gums.
