Sofovir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in your body. It is used alongside other medications to manage chronic hepatitis C in adults and children aged 12 or older, provided they weigh at least 77 pounds (35 kilograms).
Sofovir targets specific hepatitis C genotypes and is applicable only to certain individuals. Use only the medications prescribed to you and do not share them with others. Sofovir must be administered in conjunction with other antiviral drugs and should not be used on its own. Typically, it is prescribed with ribavirin, with or without peginterferon alfa.
In some cases, Sofovir is utilized for individuals who also have HIV or for those with liver cancer who are scheduled for a liver transplant. However, it is not intended as a treatment for HIV or AIDS.
If you have a history of hepatitis B, Sofovir may exacerbate this condition. Frequent blood tests will be necessary to monitor your liver function.
Sofovir is administered alongside other medications. Be sure to read the medication guide or patient instructions that come with each drug in your combination treatment. Do not alter your dosages or medication regimen without consulting your doctor.
You should refrain from using Sofovir if you are allergic to it. If you are taking Sofovir with other antiviral medications, there may be additional reasons why this combination treatment is unsuitable for you. Inform your doctor about all your medical conditions.
To determine if Sofovir is safe for you, inform your doctor if you have ever had: hepatitis B; other liver issues apart from hepatitis C; kidney disease (or if you are undergoing dialysis); HIV (human immunodeficiency virus); if you have recently taken a heart rhythm medication known as amiodarone; or if you are on a blood thinner and undergo routine "INR" or prothrombin time tests.
Sofovir is often used with ribavirin, which can pose risks of birth defects or death to an unborn child. If you are a woman, avoid using ribavirin during pregnancy. You may be required to have a negative pregnancy test before starting ribavirin and monthly throughout your treatment. If you are a man, do not take ribavirin if your sexual partner is pregnant, as sexual activity during treatment may harm the unborn baby. While on Sofovir with ribavirin, both men and women should utilize at least two effective forms of contraception. Ribavirin taken by either parent can lead to birth defects. Continue using two forms of birth control for at least six months following your last ribavirin dose. Notify your doctor immediately if a pregnancy occurs while either parent is using ribavirin. It remains unclear whether Sofovir is transmitted through breast milk or its effects on a breastfeeding infant; inform your doctor if you are nursing.
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice signs of an allergic reaction, including hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience new or worsening symptoms such as loss of appetite, upper abdominal pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
If you are taking Sofovir alongside the heart rhythm medication amiodarone, this combination can lead to serious heart-related side effects. Seek medical help right away if you experience very slow heartbeats, chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, memory issues, weakness, extreme fatigue, or light-headedness (feeling faint).
Common side effects may include headache, fatigue, anemia, nausea, or sleep disturbances (insomnia).
This list is not exhaustive, and other side effects may occur. Contact your doctor for medical advice regarding side effects.
