Selgin is utilized to assist in managing the symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD; a neurological disorder that leads to challenges with movement, muscle control, and balance) in individuals taking a combination of Levodopa and Carbidopa. This medication may aid those with Parkinson’s disease by reducing the required dose of Levodopa/Carbidopa to alleviate symptoms, preventing the effects of Levodopa/Carbidopa from diminishing between doses, and extending the duration for which Levodopa/Carbidopa effectively manages symptoms.

Selgin belongs to a class of medications known as monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitors. It operates by increasing the levels of dopamine (a necessary natural substance for controlling movement) in the brain. Selegiline can be administered alone or alongside levodopa and carbidopa to manage the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (a nervous system disorder that impairs movement, muscle control, and balance).

Selgin is to be taken orally. Patients might be instructed to take Selgin two times daily. To prevent sleep disturbances, patients are commonly advised to take Selgin during breakfast and lunch. The typical maximum dosage is 5 mg taken twice daily.

Patients should always seek advice from their physician before using this medication and must not exceed the prescribed dosage. If your doctor has recommended taking Selgin alongside another medication to treat Parkinson's disease, such as levodopa, you may be advised to reduce your levodopa dosage after taking selegiline for 2 to 3 days.

Patients should be informed that it might take several weeks for the complete effects and advantages of Selgin to become apparent. You should never stop taking this medication unless directed to do so by your physician.

Selgin may lead to stomach upset, loss of appetite, nausea, heartburn, or dry mouth. These side effects should diminish as your body adjusts to the medication. If they persist or become bothersome, notify your physician. To alleviate dry mouth, consider sucking on (sugarless) hard candy or ice chips, chewing (sugarless) gum, drinking water, or using a saliva substitute.

On rare occasions, Selgin may heighten the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. If this occurs, it is advisable to steer clear of prolonged sun exposure, wear protective clothing, and apply sunscreen. Avoid sunlamps. Selgin may induce dizziness and lightheadedness, particularly in the initial days of treatment. Refrain from tasks that require alertness if these effects occur.

Selgin should not be combined with certain other medications due to the risk of serious reactions. Inform your physician of all medications you are currently taking before beginning treatment.

Consult your physician regarding the necessity to monitor your consumption of foods containing tyramine. Eating tyramine-rich foods while on Selgin could potentially trigger headaches and/or elevated blood pressure, leading to a medical emergency. Tyramine dietary precautions should be adhered to for at least 2 weeks after stopping Selgin.
