Parlodel contains the active component Bromocriptine Mesilate, classified as a dopamine agonist medication. Bromocriptine functions by activating dopamine receptors in the brain, leading to several effects and consequently, a variety of applications for the medication.
Primarily, Parlodel is utilized to address conditions caused by elevated levels of the hormone prolactin in the bloodstream. Prolactin is secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain, and Parlodel reduces its production by stimulating dopamine receptors.
High prolactin levels are linked to multiple health issues. Excessive production of this hormone may result in abnormal breast milk secretion in both sexes (galactorrhoea) and the suppression of sexual gland function (hypogonadism), potentially leading to infertility. Additionally, elevated prolactin levels are associated with various breast and menstrual disorders. Thus, lowering prolactin levels with bromocriptine can alleviate these issues.
Parlodel is also employed in some cases to prevent or halt milk production for medical reasons after childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion. Since prolactin is responsible for initiating breast milk production, bromocriptine's ability to reduce prolactin levels effectively stops milk secretion.
Another application of Bromocriptine is to decrease prolactin production from a specific type of pituitary tumor known as a prolactinoma.
Bromocriptine's effect on dopamine receptors also lowers the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland, which is beneficial in treating conditions characterized by excessive growth hormone production, such as acromegaly.
Finally, Parlodel may be prescribed for managing Parkinson's disease. The neurotransmitter dopamine is typically diminished or absent in the brains of individuals with Parkinson's disease, which is believed to contribute to the symptoms of the illness. By stimulating dopamine receptors with bromocriptine, the action mimics dopamine replacement in the brain, thereby alleviating some symptoms associated with Parkinson's disease.
