Nicardia is prescribed for managing coronary heart disease, chronic stable angina pectoris (effort-induced angina), and hypertension. By lowering blood pressure, it helps decrease the risk of both fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular incidents, especially strokes and heart attacks. Nicardia belongs to a category of medications known as calcium channel blockers. It functions by relaxing the muscles in the heart and blood vessels. The main active ingredient in Nicardia is Nifedipine.
Nifedipine is utilized for treating hypertension (high blood pressure) and angina (chest pain). Nicardia falls under the class of drugs called calcium channel blockers, which work by relaxing (widening) blood vessels (veins and arteries). This action facilitates easier heart pumping and lessens its workload.
Follow your doctor's instructions when taking Nicardia. Do not exceed or reduce the prescribed dosage or duration of use. Your doctor may adjust your dose periodically to ensure optimal results. It is advised to take Nicardia on an empty stomach. Do not crush, chew, break, or open the capsule; swallow it whole, as breaking or opening it could lead to excessive release of the medication at once.
Contact your doctor if you experience persistent vomiting or diarrhea, or if you notice increased sweating. These symptoms can result in dangerously low blood pressure. If surgery is necessary, inform your surgeon in advance that you are using Nicardia, as you might need to discontinue its use temporarily without prior consultation, even if you feel well. Abruptly stopping the medication may worsen your condition. High blood pressure is often asymptomatic, and you may need to use blood pressure medication for life.
Frequent blood pressure checks will be necessary, and additional blood tests may be required at your doctor's office. Attend regular appointments with your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not take an additional dose to compensate for the one you missed.
The most commonly reported side effect of Nicardia is peripheral edema. Other side effects with an occurrence of 3% or less at daily doses up to 90 mg include: chest pain, leg pain, paresthesia, dizziness, rash, constipation, leg cramps, nosebleeds, runny nose, impotence, and frequent urination.
Seek emergency medical assistance if you exhibit signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
