Mysoline is utilized either on its own or in combination with other medications as an anticonvulsant for the treatment of epilepsy. It is a barbiturate acting as an anticonvulsant to manage various types of seizures, including grand mal, psychomotor, and focal seizures. The active ingredient in Mysoline is Primidone, which metabolizes into phenobarbital and phenylethylmalonamide (PEMA).
This medication should be taken two to four times daily. It is important to adhere to your doctor's instructions, not to alter the dosage, and not to discontinue treatment without their approval. It is crucial not to exceed the recommended dosage.
While using Mysoline, avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants, as this may exacerbate dizziness and drowsiness. Do not abruptly stop taking this medication without your doctor’s consent, as it could lead to status epilepticus. This medication may also lead to suicidal thoughts.
If you experience feelings of anxiety, depression, changes in mood or behavior, or if you feel hyperactive (either mentally or physically), agitated, hostile, or restless, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you are breast-feeding, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or will be delivering soon while taking Mysoline, as this medication may cause excessive bleeding during delivery. Discuss any pre-existing conditions such as lung disease, liver disease, or kidney disease with your doctor.
Mysoline is not suitable for patients with porphyria or those who have a documented allergy to primidone or phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton).
Apart from signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, and dizziness, Mysoline may also lead to stomach upset, clumsiness, decreased appetite, or fatigue. If any of these side effects become severe or troublesome, please notify your healthcare provider. In particular, seek help if you experience double vision, a sore throat, skin issues, seizures, fever, or a rash.
