Manufacturer: Dr.Reddy`s
Pharmaceutical name: Dutasteride
Pack: 30 pills (0.5 mg)
Dutas contains the active component Dutasteride, which is utilized in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate) and male pattern baldness. Dutas works by inhibiting the production of the male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), responsible for both enlarged prostate and hair loss.
Dutas provides Dutasteride 0.5 mg, which specifically obstructs the activity of both isoforms (type I and type II) of the enzyme 5α-reductase. This enzyme converts the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen chiefly linked to the development and expansion of the prostate gland. DHT also contributes to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH or enlarged prostate), and Dutas decreases DHT levels in the bloodstream, thereby halting stimulation of prostate growth in men with BPH and facilitating shrinkage of the enlarged prostate. Additionally, DHT is present in hair follicles and is the androgen associated with hair loss, as it causes the hair follicles in the scalp to gradually become smaller and produce finer hairs, ultimately preventing hair from emerging. Dutas halts the balding process by preventing DHT accumulation in the hair follicles of the scalp, thereby enabling normal hair growth.
Dutas is generally well tolerated, although side effects may occur, typically mild, including temporary impotence while undergoing treatment and reduced libido. Less prevalent side effects could involve breast tenderness and enlargement (gynecomastia) and itchy skin rashes.
You should avoid using Dutas if you are: a woman, as it is not intended for use by females and can harm an unborn child; allergic to Dutas or any other medication that contains dutasteride; or taking other medications that could interact with Dutas, increasing your risk for side effects, such as verapamil or diltiazem (for high blood pressure), ritonavir or indinavir (for HIV), itraconazole or ketoconazole (for fungal infections), or nefazodone (an antidepressant).
Take Dutas with a glass of water once daily, with or without food, for up to 6 months or longer, as advised by your healthcare provider. Avoid chewing or opening the capsule, as this may lead to soreness in your mouth or throat.
