Duovir is utilized as part of a combination of antiretroviral therapies to manage HIV. Each pill of Duovir comprises 150 mg of Lamivudine and 300 mg of Zidovudine. It is essential to use at least one additional anti-HIV medication alongside Duovir to halt the progression of HIV to AIDS.

For individuals aged 12 years and older, the recommended dosage is one Duovir pill twice a day. Those with impaired renal function or weighing less than 110 pounds (50 kg) should refrain from using Duovir. Furthermore, individuals with hypersensitivity to Zidovudine or Lamivudine should avoid this medication.

Patients taking Duovir have reported experiencing side effects such as headache, rash, nausea, malaise, fatigue, diarrhea, anorexia, vomiting, chills, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, lactic acidosis, fever, anemia, neutropenia, and thrombocytopenia.

Duovir might lead to additional side effects. It is important to inform your doctor immediately if you observe any changes in your health after starting the treatment.

Individuals who abruptly stop taking Duovir may face liver impairment, lactic acidosis, and severe liver enlargement with fat accumulation. Monitoring for hepatitis is necessary for several months following discontinuation. Those who have risk factors for liver disease, impaired kidney function, bone marrow suppression, or liver conditions should exercise caution when using Duovir. Discontinuation of Duovir is necessary if lactic acidosis or significant liver toxicity occurs during treatment. Prolonged use of Duovir may lead to myopathy and myositis. Patients on antiretroviral therapy should have their viral load regularly checked to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment.

Cytotoxic or bone marrow suppressive substances like ganciclovir and interferon-alpha may increase the hematologic toxicity linked to Zidovudine. Other drugs may affect how the kidneys process Duovir, potentially leading to severe health complications, so it is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you intend to use while on Duovir.

Zidovudine has been found to contaminate breast milk, and it is suspected that Lamivudine may do so as well. Mothers with HIV are advised against breastfeeding to avoid transmitting the virus to their infant.

Duovir can be harmful in excessive doses, so if you take more than prescribed, seek medical attention promptly for monitoring.
