Bael (Bael Tree/Aegle marmelos) is considered sacred in India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The fruit of the Bael tree is used for medicinal purposes and is also consumed as food.

The fruit is commonly used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, and other gastrointestinal issues. It has digestive and carminative properties that promote optimal gut health. Bael aids in healing ulcerated intestinal areas. It possesses antiviral, anthelmintic, and anti-inflammatory qualities and shows significant effectiveness against pathogenic organisms in the intestines. Additionally, the herb has antispasmodic effects that facilitate the relief of abdominal colic. The Bael Tree flourishes in the plains and submountain regions of India, particularly in the Western Himalayas. This tree is native to India and thrives in dry, hilly environments such as the sub-Himalayan regions and South India.

A variety of compounds have been extracted from Bael, including coumarins (like xanthotoxol and alloimperatorin methyl ether), flavonoids (such as rutin and marmesin), alkaloids (including alpha-fagarine), sterols, and essential oils. The alcoholic extract of the seeds demonstrates anti-allergic properties. The pulp of the wild fruit contains about 9% tannin, while the cultivated fruit has slightly less, and the rind has tannin levels reaching up to 20%. Tannin is also present in the leaves. Tannins aid in healing gastric and intestinal ulcers. Pectin is another significant component of the fruit.

Herb functions: The unripe Bael fruit is high in tannin content, making it effective for treating dysentery and diarrhea. The ripe Bael fruit serves as an excellent laxative, alleviating constipation and helping to expel intestinal worms. Bael displays antibacterial and antiviral properties against pathogens that lead to intestinal infections, such as infectious diarrhea. The fruit also alleviates abdominal colic and flatulence due to its antispasmodic and carminative qualities. Marmin, a coumarin obtained from the roots, possesses anti-inflammatory effects, aiding in the treatment of inflammatory intestinal conditions like colitis.
