Asprito is an atypical antipsychotic medication available in oral forms intended for treating Schizophrenia in adults and adolescents between the ages of 13 to 17. It is also used for managing manic or mixed episodes associated with Bipolar I Disorder, either as a standalone treatment or alongside lithium or valproate in both adult and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years, and as an adjunctive treatment for Major Depressive Disorder in adults. The main active component in Asprito is Aripiprazole.
Asprito is prescribed for conditions such as depressive disorder, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and manic depression, including the following uses: treating schizophrenia in individuals aged 13 and older, addressing bipolar I disorder in those aged 10 and older—which includes manic or mixed episodes related to bipolar I disorder—managing manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder when combined with lithium or valproate, providing long-term therapy for bipolar I disorder, treating major depressive disorder in adults, serving as an additional treatment alongside an antidepressant if there is insufficient improvement with the antidepressant alone, alleviating irritability related to autistic disorder in children and adolescents aged 6 to 17, and treating agitation related to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
Follow your healthcare provider's instructions precisely when taking Asprito. Do not adjust the dosage or discontinue use without consulting your provider. Asprito can be administered with or without food. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember; if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses of Asprito simultaneously.
The potential side effects of Asprito are listed below. Serious side effects may occur, including Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: high fever, rigid muscles, confusion, excessive sweating, and irregularities in pulse, heart rate, or blood pressure. These may signify a rare but severe condition that could be fatal. Seek medical attention promptly if you notice any of these symptoms.
High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can occur in some individuals taking this medication. Very high blood sugar levels can lead to coma or even death. If you have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes (e.g., being overweight or having a family history), your healthcare provider should monitor your blood sugar levels before you initiate this medication and throughout your treatment.
Notify your healthcare provider if you experience any uncontrollable movements in your face, tongue, or other parts of your body. These may indicate a serious disorder known as Tardive dyskinesia, which may persist even after discontinuation of Asprito. Tardive dyskinesia can also develop after stopping the medication.
