Artvigil (Armodafinil) is a medication designed to enhance wakefulness, primarily used to address excessive sleepiness associated with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or shift work sleep disorder. Additionally, Armodafinil may be utilized for other unlisted purposes not mentioned in this medication guide.
Do not use Artvigil if you have previously experienced a rash or allergic reaction to Armodafinil or Modafinil. If you develop any skin rash, regardless of severity, discontinue Artvigil and contact your healthcare provider. Severe allergic reactions may present symptoms such as fever, swelling of the face or tongue, sores in the mouth, difficulty breathing, leg swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or serious skin reactions like rashes or blisters.
To ensure Artvigil is appropriate for you, inform your doctor if you have a history of: liver or kidney issues; heart muscle or valve disorders (e.g., mitral valve prolapse); high blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions, or previous heart attacks; mental health disorders or psychosis; or substance abuse issues.
It is unclear whether Artvigil harms an unborn child. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. Utilize barrier methods of contraception (such as condoms or diaphragms with spermicide), as hormonal birth control methods may not be sufficiently effective during your treatment. The effects of Artvigil while breastfeeding are also unknown, so notify your doctor if you are nursing.
Artvigil is not approved for individuals under 17 years of age.
Adhere to all instructions on your prescription label. Do not take Artvigil in dosages larger or smaller than prescribed, or for extended periods. Armodafinil may lead to dependency. Never share Artvigil with another person, especially those with a history of substance abuse or addiction.
Review all patient information, medication guides, and instructional materials provided to you. If you have any questions, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Artvigil is typically taken in the morning to prevent daytime drowsiness, or 1 hour prior to the start of a work shift to manage work-related sleep disorders. Generally, it is prescribed for a duration of up to 12 weeks. Follow your doctor's recommendations.
If you are using Artvigil to address sleepiness from obstructive sleep apnea, you may also require treatment with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine. This device is an air pump connected to a mask that gently delivers pressurized air into your nose during sleep, helping ensure your airway remains open and preventing obstruction.
Avoid discontinuing the use of your CPAP machine during sleep unless advised by your doctor. The combination of CPAP therapy and Artvigil may be essential for effectively managing your condition.
Taking Artvigil should not replace the need for adequate sleep. If excessive drowsiness persists while on Artvigil, consult your doctor. Armodafinil does not cure obstructive sleep apnea or address its underlying causes. Follow your physician's instructions regarding all treatments for this condition.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but avoid taking Artvigil if you won’t be awake for several hours. If it's nearly your normal bedtime, it may be advisable to skip the missed dose and resume taking the medication the next day. Discuss with your doctor about how to manage missed doses of Armodafinil. Never take extra medication to compensate for a missed dose.
Overdose symptoms might include nausea, diarrhea, confusion, feelings of restlessness or excitement, abnormal heart rate, chest discomfort, difficulties sleeping, or hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t real).
Seek immediate medical assistance if you experience any signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as hives, trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat) or a serious skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning sensations in the eyes, skin pain, or a red or purple rash that blisters and peels). Life-threatening skin reactions requiring hospitalization have been associated with medications similar to armodafinil and typically occur within 1 to 5 weeks of starting treatment.
Discontinue using Artvigil and reach out to your doctor at the first indication of any skin rash, regardless of how minor you perceive it to be.
Seek medical help if you exhibit symptoms indicative of a serious drug reaction that may affect multiple body systems. These symptoms may include: rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, flu-like signs, unexpected bruising, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Remain vigilant and stop taking Armodafinil immediately if you experience: unusual bruising, severe tingling or numbness, pain, muscle weakness; abnormal bleeding (nosebleeds, bleeding from gums); skin lesions or blistering; oral sores, difficulties swallowing; chest pain, irregular heartbeats; or mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, hallucinations, aggression, or suicidal thoughts.
This information is not exhaustive of all possible side effects, and others may arise. Consultation with your doctor is advised for any inquiries regarding side effects.
